Infinity War, Infinite Possibilities

On November 29, 2016, Marvel Studios released the official trailer for the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War film. This movie is the third Avengers movie made by the studio, and promises to bring together the large cast of characters accumulated over the years. The movie will include the largest cast of any marvel film to date, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Hulk, The Guardians of the Galaxy, Doctor Strange, Ant-Man, Black Panther, Spider-Man, and other fan favorite heroes. The plot follows the Earth’s mightiest heroes as they battle to prevent Thanos from obtaining all the stones for the Infinity Gauntlet. The gauntlet was a weapon first introduced in a six-issue comic book series released in 1991. The weapon is powered by the six “Infinity Stones,” of which 5 out of the 6 have been previously introduced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU); these being the Space, Mind, Reality, Power, and Time stones. Each stone grants the user of the gauntlet a certain power, and, when combined, creates an ultimate weapon.

Many fans have begun theorizing about the location of the missing sixth stone, the Soul stone, but two of these seem to be the most plausible. The first of these theories, “The Heimdall Theory”, centers around the character of Heimdall whom is present in the trilogy of Thor films within the MCU. Heimdall is a character that possess the power to “see and hear all.” It is theorized that he possesses the final stone due to his power, which corresponds to those of the soul stone, and because of a vision Thor had in Avengers: Age of Ultron. There is a moment in the vision where Thor sees Heimdall without his eyesight, which possibly was taken due to him no longer possessing the Soul stone. The other theory is that the missing stone is in Wakanda, the fictional home of the Black Panther. In the trailer for Infinity War, it seems that there is a large battle taking place in Wakanda. The reasoning for this battle is unknown, but it could possibly be to prevent Thanos from taking the stone.

There are many possibilities as to what the plot of Avengers: Infinity War will be, and while these theories give a small idea as to what may happen, only time can tell. If you are interested in these theories, I recommend you do some more research online as the explanations I gave are brief. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a large ongoing story that takes place over 10 years of movies, and it can be challenging to remember everything that has happened. Personally, I will be marathoning every MCU movie before Infinity War’s release, as this movie and the untitled Avengers 4 were promised to be a “finale for the Marvel Cinematic Universe as we know it,” by Marvel Studios’ president Kevin Feige. I am super excited for this movie, and I hope that, after reading this article, you are too!
